EXTRA CURRICULAR & GIFTED & TALENTED INITIATIVES

Year 7 AsiaConnex Program: This project involves Gifted and Talented Year 7 students. Coordinated by the University of New England, Armidale, the project aims to increase global citizenship. Students will be using the Connected Classroom for real-time videoconferencing discussion with South Korean students. The Learning Outcomes of this project include enhanced cultural understanding of Asia, improved communication skills, and effective teaching of History curriculum topics using technology.

Anzac Day Assembly: Students from Elective History undertake an intensive historical inquiry project about Australia’s Anzac history to prepare and coordinate Bossley Park High School’s Anzac Day Assembly. The involvement of Bossley Park High School staff and students leading up to and beyond Anzac Day, stands as a powerful example of the authentic learning of the Australian History Curriculum.

Dawn Service & Remembrance Day: Bossley Park High School student representatives are active members of our wider community, representing our School at Dawn Service and Remembrance Day commemoration ceremonies annually. The continued effort of our students to respectfully commemorate Anzac Day, is a strong testament to the school-wide acknowledgement and appreciation of this significant day in our nation’s history.

Excursions: Excursions provide an authentic practical experience for all students to enhance their knowledge and skills in History. Some of the excursion opportunities offered to our students include:

  • Sydney Jewish Museum Excursion: Modern History and Studies of Religion students participate in lectures and a guided Museum tour, including a lecture with a Holocaust survivor, to develop their understanding of core HSC topics.

  • Macquarie University Museum of Ancient Cultures: Elective History students take a glimpse into the ancient world by participating in a guided museum tour and practical workshops aimed at developing core skills in source analysis.

SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS

History students have consistently achieved impressive HSC results. In 2018, 40% of Modern History students achieved a Band 5 or 6 result in the HSC.

History students have further been successful in competitions. Congratulations to Tyreece Vanegas (Year 9), who was successful in achieving first place in Mounties Anzac Day Creative Writing Competition for School Students, for his poem An Anzac Tale. As winner for the Secondary Schools Division, Tyreece will be invited to participate in a field trip to the Australian War Memorial and Parliament House in Canberra.
